SIM is a large independent evangelical world-wide mission organization headquarted in Charlotte, NC. SIM started in the "Sudan" of Africa. This is the "land of the blacks" which is the belt across central Afica which is just below the Sahara Desert. SIM actually began in Nigeria in 1893. SIM does have limitted work in the country of Sudan but the organization started in West Africa. There is still work in Nigeria with two seminaries and three hospitals but SIM has spread all over the world in recent years. Within the past ten years, SIM and AEF (Africa Evangelical Fellowship) joined, giving SIM a greater presence in the southern part of Africa and several more hospitals. SIM also has work in South America, India and the Far East having merged with other organizations before 1990 and hence the need to change the original name.
